Welcome Message

Greetings Pre-College Initiative Members

Coming soon to a convention center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania... it’s the National Society of Black Engineers’ 2012 National Conference. Yeah it’s getting close and soon it will be here; filled with fun and exciting events that will leave memories to last. The Pre-College Initiative Mini- Conference is going to be BIG. Word on the street is we are planning the “HYPEST” conference yet and this time we will focus on Leadership, Teamwork and Inspiration. Each day is a different theme and today your planning committee is here to let you know all about our jammed pack day of inspiration. So without further do, let’s get into the workshops, tours and meals that you too may experience by signing up and registering online and through your respected chapter. When attending our events, planned specifically for inspiration, you should look forward to attending many different workshops and participating in a wide variety of engineering design competitions.

Our day of inspiration is jam packed with activities for the PCI Convention Participant. During the day, there are many workshops that you can attend to help better yourself as a future engineer all centered on the convention theme: inspiration. NSBE is going to take care of you by sparking an interest in you and therefore inspiring you to do all that you set your mind to. Looking to participate in a design competition? In the Trash to Treasure Design Challenge you will be given what seems to be useless “trash” which you will have to turn into a very useful “treasure”.   At night, there will be fun activities planned for you such as the P.C.I. Gala, which is a semi-formal dance.   You can be an observer at the PCI Talent Show or practice you talent and go for the goal.

This year at the 2012 Annual Convention, we will be providing six out of ten meals that the P.C.I. attendees will need during their stay in Pittsburgh.  There will be three breakfasts, two lunches, and two dinners served. Special highlights for the meals we plan to provide include breakfast every morning, the Essay Contest and Oral Presentation Dinner, and an Etiquette Banquet. Food is something we have decided to focus on because we understand that a hearty breakfast and nutritional food throughout the day is very important. We would like everyone at our conference to be at their best and full potential and that all starts with the right foods. Stay tuned to learn what kind of foods will be available to you.

Besides all the great workshops there are some fun tours scheduled. One of the exciting tours will be at The Carnegie Mellon Science Center, which will have an interactive demonstration on the incredible capabilities of science and get participants engaged. There will be college tours which will give the PCI participants a better look into college life and hopefully give them an idea where they might want to apply in the future. The college tours will be hosted at University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University, which both offer amazing majors in the field of STEM. Then there are the corporate tours which will give the participants a chance on how STEM is applied in the real world.  These tours are geared towards getting the P.C.I. students inspired about going into STEM.

This year’s convention is not the one to miss out on. We said it before but we really mean it. So, if you’re worried that you may miss some important information about the Convention or just NSBE in general don’t worry because NSBE has got you covered.
