Message From Your Chair Message From Your Chair

"It was only a number of years ago that I was considering dropping out of college because of poor grades. Sometimes I think back. What if I never joined NSBE? What if I didn’t have mentors to push me? What if I gave up? It’s simple; I wouldn’t be where I am today. I wouldn’t be a college graduate nearing the completion of my second degree. I wouldn’t be in the Operations Leadership Program at UTC. I wouldn’t be National Chair of the National Society of Black Engineers. I wouldn’t be the “Cal” that members are now proud to call “Chairman”. "

Chapters

National membership in NSBE allows you to enjoy the above benefits while standing in solidarity on NSBE’s mission. Becoming an active member of your local chapter is the easiest way to get involved and DO something about it. We cannot have one without the other. Join or Renew today, and find your local chapter.

Questions about your chapter’s non-profit status?

Chapter Officers: Is your chapter not active? Chapters must be active for Senators and Delegates votes to be recognized in NSBE elections. Keeping your chapter active also permits your chapter to compete in Chapter of the Year competitions, chapter relief applications, and the like. In addition, your chapter is not counted among NSBE’s active chapters when we report end of year data.

Make sure your members are counted and make sure your chapter is counted!

To renew your chapter’s charter each year, you must ensure the following are met:

  • Chapter has at least ten (10) active members (5 members for NSBE Jr Chapters)
  • Must have the following chapter executive officers assigned and active in IMPAK (for instructions on how to update your chapter officers, download the Chapter Officer Appointment Instructions)
    • President
    • Vice President
    • Secretary
    • Treasurer

Would you like to Start a Chapter? If so, please submit a Petition to start a Chapter today!

NSBE chapters may be eligible to fall under NSBE’s non-profit (501c3) standing!

Your chapter may be eligible to fall under NSBE's non-profit status:

1. Must have your own tax ID (or use that of your University).

2. Your chapter must be active. If not, renew the chapter's charter. (Chapters that do not have Active status in IMPak are not eligible. So, chapters need to get the 10 paid members and the officers in.)

3. Confirm with the university that the chapter cannot use the University's tax-exempt status for itself as a subordinate.

4. If the chapter cannot use the tax-exempt status of the university, then the chapter needs to fill out the survey linked below.

If the chapter does not have its own tax id #:

Unfortunately, chapters are not allowed to use NSBE tax id #; you must obtain your own.  You can apply for one at the following website: https://sa.www4.irs.gov/sa_vign/newFormSS4.do
