As a Senator, you should have face time with the Chapter Membership as you perform your duties for the year.  Since you vote on behalf of your chapter in Regional/National business, you need to make sure that both yourself AND your chapter is aware of general business, focus areas, and concerns at all levels of NSBE. This does not only include the chapter, regional, and national levels of collegiate business but also the activities and initiatives of NSBE Jr. and Professional members.

Set-up regular 10 – 15 minute time during chapter General Body Meetings and Chapter Executive Board Meeting at least once a month. Focus on one or two topics per update.

How do I stay informed?

  • Attend Regional/National monthly meetings for the Senate or follow up with National/Regional Parliamentarians for information that was presented
  • Peruse the NSBE website
  • Review chapter, regional, and national governing documents
  • Communicate with other Chapter Senators across the Region and Society
  • Create a Chapter Senator Email account so your Regional Parliamentarian can ensure each year your chapter is a part of the bigger communication network.

Update Ideas

  • Explanations on NSBE’s organizational and leadership structure
  • General briefing on Regional and National Business
    • Consider topics that not only address Collegiate Members but NSBE Jr. and Professional members as well!
    • Present and help chapter members understand current business items (e.g. discussions or votes made regionally and nationally) and governing document amendments
    • Solicit feedback and opinions on  current business and governing document amendments
  • Ask general chapter members or chapter executive board about general concerns/issues pertaining to the chapter
    • Brainstorm strengths and areas of improvement for the chapter
Based on information you glean from your chapter, as a Senator or during your update discussion you can work to pinpoint if this is a chapter development issue or a NSBE structural issue (i.e. affected or constrained by Regional and National rules and regulations). Chapter development issues can be addressed by the Chapter Executive Boards with advice from Regional Counterparts. NSBE structural issues should be brought as a discussion point to the Regional Parliamentarian and addressed by the REB or Regional Senate.
