Message From Your Chair Message From Your Chair

"It was only a number of years ago that I was considering dropping out of college because of poor grades. Sometimes I think back. What if I never joined NSBE? What if I didn’t have mentors to push me? What if I gave up? It’s simple; I wouldn’t be where I am today. I wouldn’t be a college graduate nearing the completion of my second degree. I wouldn’t be in the Operations Leadership Program at UTC. I wouldn’t be National Chair of the National Society of Black Engineers. I wouldn’t be the “Cal” that members are now proud to call “Chairman”. "

FAM STATE

famstate.jpg

FAM State has taken the next step in training chapters by starting a Chapter Leadership Institute! Congratulations! Check out their story below.

Background:
There's a Society-wide recurring problem with having people step up to chapter leadership in which FAMU-FSU is no different, we just make sure the CEP (top 5) are in place before national convention as not to lose a beat. In recent years we have struggled to get those positions filled or they are filled with people who are ill-prepared or just don't know what they are doing (right or wrong).

This has caused some older members to either put their ambitions for regional or national positions on hold to take care of home or recruit fromer CEB/REB officers who returned for graduate schoole to serve again for guidance and help mentor the younger members. Out of these struggles the establishment of the Chapter Leadership Insitute transpired.

It is based loosley off the National Leadership Institute that's used to train regional and national leaders but from a chapter's perspective with the following objectives:

Goals:
  • 3 R's: REMIND younger NSBE members of the legacy of the chapter; REINVIGORATE older members to live up to that legacy; REVIVE the chapter with passionate members yound and old to sustain the chapter for years to come.
  • To encourage more chapters members to serve in chapter leadership, either an elected, appointed or committee position.
  • To have every position contested, at the very least one person from the institute in contention for an elected position.
Structure:

A Workshop is to be held on all operational zones of NSBE,
  • Membership
  • Programs
  • Communications
  • Finance
  • Administration
These workshops are used to inform members how each zone operates and affects the chapter as well as to clear any questions and gauge interest for those who may be interested in serving in subsequent years. Each workshop covers the following material:
  • What exactly is this zone?
  • What is this zone responsible for?
  • What positions are in this zone? What are their dutites?
  • How can I get involved with this zone?
