FORT VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY
The Fort Valley State University (FVSBE) chapter of NSBE is a member of Region 3. Their president Maurice Dukes says that the chapter motto for 2011 is “empowering others.” One of their notable events for this year includes a workshop known as FVSU Brother-to-Brother. This event serves as a mechanism to enhance job placement by focusing on resume writing skills, interview skills, career fair etiquette, and networking. Another event is the Poetry Cafe for Black History Month, where students pay homage to African-American poets recognized as trail blazers in our literary history, showcase the hardships they faced and conquered, and inspire (and motivate) others to continue their educational journeys.
FVSBE will also launch its 1st Annual Black Entrepreneur Competition. Recognizing that FVSU is also a historically black college (and composed of mostly minority students) this competition focuses on business development and promoting entrepreneurial spirit within minority communities. Participants will be challenged to develop a company vision and plan utilizing limited resources within a defined timeframe. Winners will receive funds to translate their ideas into reality. Previous chapter events include a Study-A-Thon and Food Drive. The Study-A-Thon was a campus-wide study session for the entire school which helped everyone prepare for upcoming exams and finals.
