GEORGIA SOUTHERN
The Georgia Southern (GSU) Chapter of NSBE is located in Statesboro, Georgia. Their president Mario Hulett shares that the chapter hosted its first Walk for Education on Saturday, October 23, 2010 at the local Boys and Girls Club. 62 organizations participated in this event, some of which included NSBE Chapters from Southern Polytech and Georgia Tech. The event included a neighborly walk through various black and minority communities where 100 bags of educational information about SAT, ACT, GED, college admissions and brochure information, and local youth program information were distributed and shared with the residents.
The chapter also sponsored a Black Male Empowerment Summit where the men within the chapter attended a mini conference for black males on GSU campus that empowered and encouraged them to be strong, demonstrate leadership, and promote a sense of community on campus. GSU NSBE is also hosting the Better World Books program which helps promote literacy in less fortunate countries; through funding for books. Africa is one of the main benefactors of this program. Drop boxes collections have yielded a total of over 200 books. At the GSU NSBE Study Session members brought their books and computers to a central location to complete their homework assignments and study for upcoming tests. This was a time for corporate study and members assumed a posture of cooperation, giving and receiving assistance to promote learning and share knowledge.
