UNIVERSITY OF TRINIDAD
University of Trinidad (UTT) is primarily an engineering educational institute located in the Caribbean. It was established within NSBE in 2007 at one of its first international leadership summit. Now four years later, it continues to thrive growing stronger each year, particularly, in O’Meara & Pt. Lisas (two of the eight UTT campuses).
The chapter’s main focus is to implement programs that promote leadership and self development. In doing so they hope to increase the numbers of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community. An example of this includes projects such as the UTT Home Visit Project, which showcases young engineer’s community outreach and support efforts. This project entails collecting contributions from the general public, visiting various children’s home within the country, and providing recipients with basic hygiene services and amenities that so much of us take for granted. These include items such as food, clothing, books, games, financial assistance, mentorship, and educational tutoring.
In the future, UTT hopes to increase its community impact by partnering with certain organizations that focus on helping the children through volunteerism. UTT’s chapter goals for 2011 include a) attending their first NSBE’s National Convention, b) expanding their outreach and support programs and c) continuing to develop their fundraising to support all of these endeavors.
