Message From Your Chair Message From Your Chair

"It was only a number of years ago that I was considering dropping out of college because of poor grades. Sometimes I think back. What if I never joined NSBE? What if I didn’t have mentors to push me? What if I gave up? It’s simple; I wouldn’t be where I am today. I wouldn’t be a college graduate nearing the completion of my second degree. I wouldn’t be in the Operations Leadership Program at UTC. I wouldn’t be National Chair of the National Society of Black Engineers. I wouldn’t be the “Cal” that members are now proud to call “Chairman”. "

Letter From Your Region II Chair, Matthew McFarland

Dear Region II,

First and foremost, you should be congratulated for your accomplishments thus far in achieving our Regional Directive of Academic Excellence. We have truly set the mark as the “Model Region” once again, by having the highest number of GPAs confirmed in the Society to date. We now have 639 GPAs confirmed, nearly 200 more than at the end of last year! Although we have set the bar, there is still time to set this mark even higher. Until this number resembles the number of active members in Region II, your work is not done. My first challenge to you is to make sure everyone in your chapter has a GPA or transcript on file with WHQ. All it takes is a simple e-mail to scholarships@nsbe.org!

Also, as we prepare for the end of the year, in addition to finishing the semester strong academically, I challenge you to do two more things. First, many of you have already started thinking about whether to pursue NSBE leadership next year. I challenge you to stop thinking and make the decision to DO! Whether you choose to step up to chapter, regional or national leadership, the sky is the limit. This organization cannot survive without you, our motivated student leaders, to lead our membership. Your vision and passion are the keys to this organization’s success in accomplishing the mission!

Second, for those of you who now serve in leadership positions, it’s important for you not only to identify a successor but make sure that person is transitioned properly. One of the outstanding aspects of our society is the fact that we are one of the largest student-run organization in the country. However, this also means we have a high turnover of leadership from year to year. Where we often struggle as leaders is in the area of transitioning. I implore you to spend that extra time working with your successor, making sure he or she is capable of picking up where you leave off. This simple action will save time later for effective planning and prove beneficial to the immediate future success of your chapter!

I look forward to seeing each and every one of you next month at our society’s premier event, the 2011 Annual Convention in St. Louis, Mo. Your Convention Planning Committee chair, Mustafa Alamin, his committee and the National Executive Board have worked diligently for the last 11 months preparing for this event, and now it is time to see the fruits of their labor. This is a time for us to come together as a region to show the entire society how passionate and dedicated we are about accomplishing the mission. Region II, it’s on you to make sure you are there to indulge in this great celebration, networking event and opportunity to continue your growth academically and professionally.  I’ll see you in St. Louis!!!

With NSBE love,

Can I get a 22222222 hype?!?!?!
