Letters From Your Chairs
Letter From Your Region VI Chair, Ogugua Agu
Hello, my lovely Region VI!
It has been a wonderful year so far, but it is not over yet! I hope you all are preparing for the Annual Convention in St. Louis, which is happening March 23–27, 2011.
I am taking this opportunity to remind you all of a few key points for this year. Our regional directives are “STARR,” which stands for Sustainability, Technology, Academic Achievement, Recruitment and Retention. The chief point is “Sustainability.” Merriam-Webster defines the term “sustain” as such: “to support, hold, or bear up from below.” This is where your strength comes in as the membership. Great leaders refuse to accept the status quo. We must make sure that we are active participants in the Society. We must rise to the call for leadership, seek information on influential positions, work with NSBE senators to bring positive change, and provide great input.
By becoming active participants, we will be following our National Directives of Pipeline Development and Academic Excellence. Pipeline Development and Academic Excellence are crucial to the sustainability of NSBE as a whole. Be sure to reach out to your counterparts on all levels, be they NSBE Jr., collegiate or Alumni members. In addition, Academic Excellence is a key to the fulfillment of NSBE’s mission. As Malcolm X said, “Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today." We must prepare ourselves to be culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.
With that said, your goals for this upcoming Annual Convention should be to become actively engaged with the workshops, to take great pride in yourselves as members and to be involved with the parliamentary procedures denoted by the NSBE Senate. For great leaders create a sense of urgency; they are impatient in the best of ways. They refuse to sit by and let things take their natural course. Therefore, I encourage you to have that sense of urgency and communicate it.
Sincerely,
Ogugua Agu
2010–2011 Region VI Chairperson
