Celebrating African American History Month with Role Models in Science & Engineering Achievement: Ed
Courtesy of USA Science & Engineering Festival
Ed Dwight, Jr. was a 28-year-old Air Force captain at Travis Air Force Base in California when he got a letter from President Kennedy in 1961 urging him to apply to test-pilot school as a prelude to becoming America’s first black astronaut. The son of a Negro League baseball player, Ed had been a B-57 pilot for two years, had flown more than 2,000 hours in high-performance fighter jets and had an aeronautical engineering degree from Arizona State.
To put it mildly, flying was in his blood, and the prospect of becoming the first African American in space was a dream come true – but this dream would be cut short.

SAT to drop essay requirement and return to top score of 1600 in redesign of admission test
The SAT college admission test will no longer require a timed essay, will dwell less on fancy vocabulary and will return to the familiar 1600-point scoring scale in a major overhaul intended to open doors to higher education for students who are now shut out.
The second redesign of the SAT this century, announced Wednesday, will take effect in early 2016, as today’s ninth graders are sitting for their college admission tests.
