Frenae Smith is an exemplary individual who focuses her life around serving others and being an active resource within the community she lives.  She currently serves as the Region IV Professionals Chair Emeritus as well as the chair for the 2013 NSBE Professional Development Conference.  While these responsibilities are noteworthy for the dedication needed to execute, NSBE isn’t the only organization who has recognized Frenae’s commitment.

On May 10, Frenae was recognized with 17 other individuals as a 2013 Southeast Michigan “Quiet Hero” during the 15th Annual Ford Freedom Award ceremony.   This award is presented to the awardees for their unwavering commitment to their Michigan community.  Quiet Heroes are those who dedicate their lives to performing impactful work without intention of recognition.

In late June, Frenae will receive recognition from the Engineering Society of Detroit and will be awarded as the Outstanding Young Engineer of 2013.  This distinction is presented each year to an engineer under 35, who has provided outstanding contributions to benefit the engineering community.  Nominated by close friend and fellow NSBE board member Monique Lake, Frenae’s commitment to NSBE, SWE, young engineers in the Detroit area and beyond, she certainly has earned the title of Outstanding Young Engineer.   One of Frenae’s most spoken lines when mentoring young people is, “Leadership is not a position, it is a function.”  Through her work, mentorship and STEM advocacy, Frenae truly leads by example and is a role model to those she comes across.
Another of Frenae’s demonstrations to her dedication in engineering is her title of being lifetime member #195 of the National Society of Black Engineers.
