Chapter Highlights: NSBE Atlanta Chapter Community Involvement

News Category:
The NSBE Jr. Retreat was held in collaboration with Southern Polytechnic State University's NSBE Chapter on August 16, 2014. There were 60+ students and parents in attendance for this GTSBE Kickoff Event. The event was geared towards introducing/re-introducing students to what NSBE is and how they can effectively contribute to the NSBE mission through teamwork!
It all began with a presentation from GTSBE President Maya Carrasquillo with NSBE background, how she became involved with NSBE (former NSBE Jr. Member), and how the students can S.T.E.A.M. Line the Pipeline. It was very interactive and got the student's minds prepared for the remainder of the event. Then there was zone training where the students were divided up between Administrative Zone, Programs Zone, and Finance Zone to learn how each area works within the organization. After they completed their training they had to put their new skills to use in an outdoor teambuilding activity! The students were definitely competitive and learned how to communicate effectively to get the tasks done.

To benefit all attendees they later had the opportunity to learn about the zones they did not get trained in. The close of the event was amazing as we had six different groups create a mock event for the school year. Their events had to emphasize one of the four NSBE National Directives and Initiatives. These students were extremely creative, determined, and by the end of it all knew what it meant to be a member of NSBE. GTSBE and SPSBE would like to thank all of the parents and community leaders who brought their students to this event. It takes the initiative from home and their surroundings to really make these students as successful as possible.

We would also like to thank our NSBE Atlanta Professional Chair, BryanRogers, for reaching out to us and volunteering for the event. Please refer to the photos to get a visual of how exciting this Retreat was!
