Kick Start Your Semester
Although everyone has a different class schedule and doesn’t attend the same school, there are plenty of general strategies that everyone can utilize to start their semester off right. The earlier you try these strategies the better, but they can certainly be used throughout the entire semester!
GO TO CLASS!
One of the easiest ways to ensure that you are getting the most of your education is by attending class as often as possible. You may not think it matters much, but attending lecture is your main opportunity to build a relationship with your professor and address concepts that you don’t understand. At the very least you will ensure that you are keeping up with the teacher’s course timeline.
Build a relationship with your professors
Many people don’t realize this immediately, but your professor is your greatest resource within a class. You don’t have to force an interaction but getting to know them is as easy as asking a question after class and attending their office hours every now and then. If you show a genuine interest in a class, usually the professor will be more willing to write a good recommendation or be understanding of your specific needs. Ways to strengthen this relationship include showing up to every class on time and participating in lecture by asking questions.
Get to know your long term schedule.
If your teachers each provide a syllabus with a timeline, it is in your best interest to know where important deadlines fall. Take the time in the beginning of the semester to enter all project deadlines and test dates into a calendar. Being aware of your workload distribution will help you avoid those situations where you realize you have a test in two days and haven’t made time to study yet.
Utilize campus resources!
Most campuses have tutoring services and soft skill workshops that can help you throughout your time in college. Often times there are people in place that can help you with choosing classes, finding financial aid and scholarships, and beginning your career.
Find or form a productive study group.
It is often advantageous to study with other people, but it is also important not to waste your time. There is nothing wrong with studying in a relaxing environment, but if there is no work/studying being completed then you need to assess how the group is impacting you overall.
Take good care of yourself.
It is important to maintain proper mental and physical health while in school. If you are feeling stressed or overwhelmed, it is ok to take a break to just relax your mind. Similarly, proper eating habits can affect your overall academic performance.
