GTA Applications GTA Applications

The Golden Torch Awards (GTA) recognizes excellence among technical professionals, corporate, government and academic leaders, and university and pre-college students. These awards illustrate the possibilities that can be cultivated through support and responsibility. The proceeds of GTA are used to create college scholarships for gifted high school students. #NSBE2013 Photo Recap #NSBE2013 Photo Recap

NSBE's 39th Annual Convention in Indianapolis recorded the second-highest attendance, with more than 8,200 registrants checking in. The largest attended convention remains Orlando, with more than 9,600 attendees. Roland S. Martin, former CNN contributor and TVOne host drew standing room only crows to the Opening Session on Wednesday, which was sponsored by the United Technologies Corporation. At the Golden Torch Awards ceremony on Saturday, the United States Military Academy was honored for an historic accomplishment in diversity. During the Convention, eight African-American professors of West Point’s Department of Mathematical Sciences received NSBE’s Dr. Janice A. Lumpkin Educator of the Year honor on behalf of their department. No other college or university math department in the country has as many African-American professors.

NSBE Jr. Chapter Takes 1st Place NSBE Jr. Chapter Takes 1st Place

The Metro Warriors STEM NSBE Jr. Chapter won 1st place in the middle school division at the Ten80 Student Racing Challenge: NASCAR STEM Initiative™ held at the Max Dragway in Concord, NC on May 18. Representing Region II, the Metro Warriors also placed 1st for team presentation. The Ten80 Student Racing Challenge: NASCAR STEM Initiative is a league in which middle and high school students* practice the art of being professionals. Young men and women, supported by a community of mentors and educators, collaborate and compete in ways that mirror business & marketing executives, engineers, technicians, green transportation designers and professional motor-sports  teams. Battelle and National Society of Black Engineers Collegiate Scholarship Program



 

Purpose:
  • To support the Will of Gordon Battelle to enhance interest in science, technology, engineering and math.
  • To promote Battelle’s commitment to diversity and outreach to underrepresented groups.
  • To create national exposure for Battelle to potential recruits.
  • To encourage and reward academic excellence.
  • To provide a financial support mechanism for African-American college students..
Eligibility:
  • College Junior or Senior NSBE member
  • Major in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science or Engineering, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineer, Statistics and Applied or Engineering Physics
  • Must be a financial NSBE member
  • Applications will be evaluated and the recipients(s) will be selected by NSBE representatives via the NSBE IMPAK system. Only applications submitted for the Battelle Scholarship program will be considered for the award.

Application Requirements:

  • Completed online scholarship application via applicant’s NSBE IMPAK system.
  • Transcript (for review of relevant courses taken) – Spring 2011 Grades Accepted.
  • Resume (submitted during application process)

Scholarships Award:  14 Total Scholarship Awards:

  • Six (6) Battelle $5,000 Scholarships
  • Two (2) Pacific Northwest National Laboratory $5,000 Scholarships
  • Two (2) Brookhaven National Laboratory $5,000 Scholarships
  • Two (2) Idaho National Laboratory $5,000 Scholarships
  • Two (2) Oak Ridge National Laboratory $5,000 Scholarships
