The Golden Torch Awards (GTA) recognizes excellence among technical professionals, corporate, government and academic leaders, and university and pre-college students. These awards illustrate the possibilities that can be cultivated through support and responsibility. The proceeds of GTA are used to create college scholarships for gifted high school students. National Leadership Conference National Leadership Conference

It is that time of year again! The 2012 National Leadership Conference (NLC) is to be held June 6th - 10th in New London, CT. The theme of NLC and the Regional Leadership Conferences (RLC) is Leadership: A Catalyst for Positive Change.

NLC is NSBE's premier training program for national and regional officers. Participants receive training in such areas as budgeting, expense management, public relations, and funds solicitation. They will also learn soft skills such as effective communication, teamwork and conflict resolution.

"It was only a number of years ago that I was considering dropping out of college because of poor grades. Sometimes I think back. What if I never joined NSBE? What if I didn’t have mentors to push me? What if I gave up? It’s simple; I wouldn’t be where I am today. I wouldn’t be a college graduate nearing the completion of my second degree. I wouldn’t be in the Operations Leadership Program at UTC. I wouldn’t be National Chair of the National Society of Black Engineers. I wouldn’t be the “Cal” that members are now proud to call “Chairman”. "

Golden Torch Awards 2011-2012 Scholarship Program

The Golden Torch Awards (GTA) Scholarship Program is NSBE’s most prestigious award for pre-college students. It supports the NSBE mission by supporting the college bound dreams of pre-college students, who will continue the legacy of NSBE. The GTA was designed to celebrate the accomplishments of African-American engineers and other technical professionals. The GTA Scholarship Program honors high school students who exemplify leadership and excellence (academic, community service, etc). Students will be selected based on academic achievement, community service, and their educational and professional career goals.

Eligibility:  Candidate MUST be NSBE Jr. Member to apply. Graduating High School Seniors Only.  

Candidate must submit one official copy of your most recent transcript (Spring 2011), demonstrating a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0. Transcripts should be emailed to scholarships@nsbe.org. Applicant will also be asked to UPLOAD an unofficial copy of transcript.

Candidate must submit a personal statement (not to exceed 500 words) as part of the online application on the following topic, "How you will continue the legacy of NSBE and its mission, and how you will serve as a role model in your community upon completion of your college degree?"

Tip: Type your essay in WORDPAD. Spell check and check word count. Once complete, cut and paste your essay into the application.
 

  • Candidate is required to submit three letters of recommendation. The letters should reflect the following:
    • Candidate’s academic history and potential
    • Candidate’s community service involvement
    • Candidate’s leadership roles
    • Statement about candidate’s overall character
    • In what capacity the reference knows the candidate

Scholarship applicants must submit by March 1, 2012 proof of acceptance to a full-time study program for engineering, computer science, mathematics, or technology. The institution must be a four-year accredited Bachelor of Science degree granting university program.

If Selected As A Golden Torch Awards Scholars In 2011:


Recipients must maintain a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA throughout the lifetime of the award. If the recipient’s GPA falls below a 2.75, he or she will be placed on academic probation for one academic term (quarter or semester), at which time their academic record will be evaluated. Recipients must also remain in an engineering /technical program throughout the lifetime of the award;

  • If the recipient’s GPA fails to reflect a 2.75 or better GPA after two academic terms, the award is subject to cancellation. However, extraneous circumstances will be handled on an individual basis;

Scholarship awards are given directly to the recipients. Recipients are responsible for contacting the Programs Team at World Headquarters by July 1st of every year to provide updated contact information, verification of collegiate GPA, and an address to mail the award check (if different from address on original application) - REQUIRED.

Award: To Be Determined ($4,000 at minimum - The quantity of scholarship awards and the scholarship award amount may be increased in 2012. The final value has not yet been determined.)

Previous award amount: $4,000 (over a four-year period - $1,000 per year)
 

  • First award payment disbursed in March 2012 at Annual Convention in Pittsburgh, PA
