The Mike Shinn Distinguished Member of the Year 2012
For Undergraduate & Graduate Students
The Mike Shinn NSBE Distinguished Member of the Year Program provides scholastic motivation to achieve and serves as a tool to encourage members to continue to strive for academic excellence, while developing professional and leadership skills through organization and community involvement. This distinction is awarded to a female and male NSBE member who exemplifies all the NSBE mission embodies. The awards are given to student members who have demonstrated high scholastic performance, dedicated service to the Society and other organizations, and who possess high professional promise. Judged on the basis of fulfillment of the mission through participation in NSBE programs and other activities, the members selected for this prestigious honor serve as role models for the entire membership.
The female and male NSBE Distinguished Member of the Year will be awarded at the Golden Torch Awards event held March 31, 2012 during the NSBE Annual Convention in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Scholarship Award: Two (2) $7,500 Scholarship Awards* Golden Torch Award
*(Awarded to one male and one female member. All award packages include an additional Annual Convention Travel/Housing Stipend and waived registration.)
Selection Criteria:
- Award recipients will be selected based on a combination of the following criteria:
- NSBE Service and Involvement (Chapter, Regional, and/or National)
- NSBE & University Academic Achievement
- Professional Development
- Campus & Community Impact: Community Service and TORCH Activities
- Essay Responses
Application Criteria:
- All applicants must be paid NSBE members.
- All NSBE undergraduate and graduate student members are eligible to apply. (Non-engineering/technical majors are not eligible.)
- Award GPA Minimum Requirements: 3.2 on a 4.0 scale
- NOTE: Former BCA and Major Sponsor Scholars or NSBE Fellows are eligible to apply.
- NOTE: Former Mike Shinn Distinguished Fellows are ineligible to apply.
- The Golden Torch Awards Nomination packet submission is NOT required.
All applications must include:
- An Official University/College transcript (Spring 2011 transcripts).
- A current Resume posted in your membership profile.
- Letters of Recommendation (at least 3): Support from a high ranking official, top level manager, direct supervisor, engineering dean, human resource professional, experienced colleague, teacher or noted authority in the engineering/technical community. Letters can be uploaded during the application process OR mailed to address below.
- Photographs: Two (2) copies of a full color Headshot is required. Label all photos in pencil on reverse. Digital pictures MUST be at least 300 DPI. PHOTOS ARE NOT RETURNED. Applicants will be asked to upload a photo, but are also REQUIRED to mail photos as outlined above to the following address. Photos and letters of recommendation can be sent to the address below.

Awardee Selection Process: Award selections will be based on the selection criteria of University Academic Achievement, Service to NSBE (Chapter, Regional, and/or National), other Professional, Campus, and Community Activities, and the applicants’ response to an essay question. Each category will be weighted differently in the selection scoring process. All applicants will be notified of their selection status by mail and/or email once selection has been completed. Award checks will be distributed during the Golden Torch Awards event at the Annual Convention in Pittsburgh, PA. Award recipients are expected to attend at the Golden Torch Awards event during the Annual Convention. Please note the Golden Torch Awards (GTA) is a formal event (black-tie optional). Please Note The Following:
- Registration waivers will be processed prior to the Annual Convention. For those that register for the Annual Convention prior to selection, you will receive a waiver and refund of your paid registration.
- Travel stipends will be distributed prior to Annual Convention until March 11th with appropriate documentation only.
- Those recipients that have not submitted the proper documentation prior to this date will have stipends processed AFTER the close of the convention.
- All recipients are completely responsible for their initial travel expenses. DO NOT WAIT for the scholarship recipients’ announcement to complete your convention travel plans!
