GTA Applications GTA Applications

The Golden Torch Awards (GTA) recognizes excellence among technical professionals, corporate, government and academic leaders, and university and pre-college students. These awards illustrate the possibilities that can be cultivated through support and responsibility. The proceeds of GTA are used to create college scholarships for gifted high school students. #NSBE2013 Photo Recap #NSBE2013 Photo Recap

NSBE's 39th Annual Convention in Indianapolis recorded the second-highest attendance, with more than 8,200 registrants checking in. The largest attended convention remains Orlando, with more than 9,600 attendees. Roland S. Martin, former CNN contributor and TVOne host drew standing room only crows to the Opening Session on Wednesday, which was sponsored by the United Technologies Corporation. At the Golden Torch Awards ceremony on Saturday, the United States Military Academy was honored for an historic accomplishment in diversity. During the Convention, eight African-American professors of West Point’s Department of Mathematical Sciences received NSBE’s Dr. Janice A. Lumpkin Educator of the Year honor on behalf of their department. No other college or university math department in the country has as many African-American professors.

NSBE Jr. Chapter Takes 1st Place NSBE Jr. Chapter Takes 1st Place

The Metro Warriors STEM NSBE Jr. Chapter won 1st place in the middle school division at the Ten80 Student Racing Challenge: NASCAR STEM Initiative™ held at the Max Dragway in Concord, NC on May 18. Representing Region II, the Metro Warriors also placed 1st for team presentation. The Ten80 Student Racing Challenge: NASCAR STEM Initiative is a league in which middle and high school students* practice the art of being professionals. Young men and women, supported by a community of mentors and educators, collaborate and compete in ways that mirror business & marketing executives, engineers, technicians, green transportation designers and professional motor-sports  teams. The ExxonMobil Corporate Scholarship 2012


Goal:  To encourage academic excellence and leadership development among African –American collegiate students in the engineering disciplines.

Eligibility:

  • Minimum Required GPA: 3.5
  • College Sophomore, or Junior NSBE member
  • Major in Chemical, Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering
  • Applicants must submit a 300 word minimum essay in response to the following question:
    • “What advice would you offer fellow engineering students to motivate them to make academic excellence a priority in their college career?”
    • "Why has academic excellence been a priority in your college career, and how do you influence fellow engineering students to follow your example"
  • Applications will be evaluated and the recipient(s) will be selected by NSBE. Only applications submitted for the ExxonMobil Corporate Scholarship program will be considered for the award. Recipients will also be considered for a summer internship with ExxonMobil. Accepting the internship, if offered, is not a requirement for being awarded the scholarship
Application Requirements:

  • Complete ONLINE application on NSBE's IMPAK system
  • Transcript (Spring 2011 or later grades can be used)- Emailed to scholarships@nsbe.org.
  • Resume (Uploaded in Online Application)
  • Essay– Completed in online application
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation (uploaded in Online application)- at least one from the
  • College of Engineering (i.e., Department Chair, Dean of Engineering)

Awards:  Ten (10) $2,000 Scholarship Awards

Online Submission Deadline:  November 2, 2011
