Greetings NSBE Family,

The time has come for the 30th Annual Region I Fall Regional Conference!!!

AdriannaI don’t know about you, but I love FRC.  It is the place where most people have their first real NSBE experience and where they decide whether or not this organization is going to become a major part of their lives.  This is where students get transformed into leaders, members get transformed into friends, and the realization of our “Talented Tenth” like responsibility occurs.  It is for this reason that your FRC Co-CPC’s promise to make this year’s conference one that you will never forget!!!

The 30th Annual FRC will take place in Buffalo, NY (UPSTATE STAND UP) from November 10th -12th, 2006. As the theme states, it truly is “Our Time, Our Renaissance.”  Throughout the course of the conference we will be reviewing our Black History, specifically where the STEM fields are concerned, and challenging whether or not we are doing our best to make our own history today.  In addition we plan to develop ourselves for the future based upon L.O.V.E., our National Directives.

In order to make this our own renaissance, think about the Harlem Renaissance for example.  That was a time when we multiplied our pride and confidence in who we were as a people.  We expressed great amounts of creativity in music, poetry, and dance and started realizing all that we have contributed to the evolution of this country.  Now, it is our turn, as the premier student leaders that we claim to be, to embrace the greatness that has been passed down through generations and make our mark on engineering, technology, and science.  Yes, our excellence ranges far beyond just music and sports, but it is up to us to let the world know.

As you may be aware, Region I has been known to be somewhat of the “trendsetters” of NSBE because we have done so many things first. So, to kickoff the drive to impact tomorrow today, we will be promoting the name/slogan “Region First!” instead of Region I while at the conference.

You know Region I works hard, plays hard, and always brings the hotness. This year is no different.  Don’t let any of your chapter members miss the greatest FRC yet! Register NOW and tell a friend!

Can’t wait to see you there!!!

Undergraduate Students in Technical Research

The objective of the Undergraduate Students in Technical Research (USTR) program is to encourage African Americans and other underrepresented collegiate members to participate in technical research projects that will lead to the pursuit of graduate degrees in technical fields. Initiated through a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the USTR competition allows students to gain experience delivering technical presentations. Participants display their research via a poster presentation (3 x 4-ft. display board), using a variety of graphical wall displays (maps, charts, photographs, computer outputs, etc.) and working models and/or material samples. Participants will be judged on the technical content of their displays, oral presentation skills, and a 10-minute question and answer session with judges. All regional participants are welcome to submit the complete project report for the abstract being submitted to be included in the 2006 NSBE Technical Proceedings.

ELIGIBILITY: Research activities at the undergraduate level including senior projects, company sponsored research programs and independent study courses all qualify for the
competition. Research topics should reflect practical applications of engineering technology. All participants must be current, paid NSBE undergraduate members and must have a confirmed GPA in NOL.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Twelve students will be chosen to compete at the fall regional conferences for their respective region, and the top three winners from each region compete at the National Convention. Participants must register through NSBE Online for the regional competition, which includes abstract submission (350 words). Participants are required to register for their respective fall regional conferences to be eligible to compete. All participants will be notified to confirm application status. All regional finalists are requested to submit the complete project report for the abstract being submitted to be included in the 2006 NSBE Technical Proceedings. All official regional participants are welcomed to submit complete reports through your NSBE Online USTR application.
