Academic Excellence

Academic Excellence (AEx)

As the National Society of Black Engineers, one of our primary goals is to “increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically…” In an effort to meet this goal, our Academic Excellence program is designed to meet the academic needs of our membership.  Some of our AEx programs include:

Academic Technical Bowl (ATB)

The objective of the Academic Technical Bowl is to encourage and showcase Academic Excellence and understanding of the fundamental principles of engineering covered in the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE/EIT) Examination. Program participation occurs through healthy competition in a “Jeopardy!” style game show format with multiple choice questions. Questions cover a wide variety of topics, from NSBE and African American Scientists and Inventors history to general engineering and science curricula from the FE/EIT. Each team consists of four (4) members (including at most one graduate student and one underclassman) and one alternate, who represent their NSBE Chapter. Regional Technical Bowl competitions will be held at the Fall Regional Conferences and the winning team from each region will compete for the national title at the National Convention. Teams must register for their respective Fall Regional Conference to compete in the regional competition.

Undergraduate Research Regional Showcase (URRS)/ Undergraduate Students in Technical Research (USTR)

The objective of the Undergraduate Research Regional Showcase (URRS) and Undergraduate Students in Technical Research (USTR) programs is to encourage underrepresented undergraduate collegiate students seeking STEM-based degrees to participate in technical research projects that may lead to the pursuit of graduate degrees in technical fields. Student participants who have completed summer research in academia or through internships will have their work highlighted on the regional level via URRS, as well as the guaranteed opportunity to compete on the national level via the Undergraduate Students in Technical Research Program (USTR). Similar to USTR, the Undergraduate Research Regional Showcase allows students to gain experience delivering technical presentations. Participants display their research via a poster board presentation (3 x 4-ft. display board), using a variety of graphical wall displays (maps, charts, photographs, computer outputs, etc.) and working models and/or material samples. Participants will be judged on the technical content of their displays, oral presentation skills, and a question and answer session with judges. All participants are welcome to submit the complete project report for the abstract being submitted to be included in the 2009 NSBE Technical Proceedings.

Achievers Plus

Achievers Plus or A+ is NSBE’s premier academic excellence program. It's designed to promote academic achievement & help students improve their overall GPA. There is a series of programs for our members to enhance their academic and technical excellence. Each program is outlined below.

Socratic Learning is interactive online tutoring for specifically for College Freshmen & Sophomores. It engages students in an active discussion with an educator and requires them to work their mind and formulate and express their thoughts in order to learn and solve problems.

The Team Challenge Heptathlon is a Regional Academic Excellence program whose purpose is three-fold:
serve as a tool for evaluating the overall academic excellence program at each chapter;
utilize peer relationships to motivate members to participate in regional and national AEx programs;
foster healthy competition between chapters in the area of Academic Excellence.

A+ Conference Tutoring is a program designed to provide qualified tutors to assist students in many of the crucial subject areas of the engineering and science curriculum. The goal is to utilize undergraduate students with a 'B' or better average in a specific subject as well as graduate students and alumni as tutors. Tutoring sessions will take place at the Fall Regional Conference as well as the National Convention.

Increasing Minorities Attaining Graduate Education (IMAGE) is a multi dimensional program is to increase the number of NSBE members going on to graduate school and ensuring their success there. Consequently, four major goals have been set forth for IMAGE.
To increase the interest of undergraduates in pursuing graduate education;
To provide support to graduating seniors applying to graduate school;
To provide financial support to students in graduate school;
To provide academic support to students in graduate school.
