Pre-College Initiative (PCI)
The Pre-College Initiative is a program within NSBE where collegiate and alumni members encourage students from grades K-12 to garner interest and develop skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The partnership of collegiate chapters with pre-college initiative students allows for individualized mentoring and tutoring, awareness into higher learning, guidance in competitions and design fairs, and a strengthened pipeline for information to be disseminated. The objective of the initiative is not only to encourage participation in the STEM fields and matriculation to college but to also help students realize and pursue their ambitions.
Academic Excellence
Academic Excellence encompasses those programs aimed at supporting NSBE members in their academic pursuits, and rewarding those members with outstanding academic achievements. These programs target memebrs at all levels: pre-collegiate, collegiate, and graduate.
Graduate Student Programs
NSBE has developed a number of programs targeted at graduate students and members pursuing graduate degrees in fields of science, mathematics, engineering, and science. The fundamental goals of our graduate student programs are
- To increase the number of African - American college students seeking and completing graduate degrees in the fields of engineering and science.
- To increase the number of African - American undergraduate and graduate students taking advantage of research opportunities.
- To provide skill development, entry preparation and mentoring opportunities that assist graduate students with entry to graduate programs and completion of their graduate degrees.
- To provide an avenue for graduate students to present current research and network with other graduate students.
- To assist in expanding the pool of potential African - American college academicians serving institutions of higher learning.
A Walk for Education (AWFE)
This program is an international effort to encourage and promote math and science education within underrepresented groups. During AWFE, members go into neighborhoods to promote the value of education—especially math and science education—for secondary and post secondary students. AWFE serves to promote the T.O.R.C.H projects in cities across membership locations, including our partnership with Intel at the Intel Clubhouses. Educational goodie bags will provide info about the closest available NSBE T.O.R.C.H center learning opportunities.
