This checklist is a comprehensive guide to being an effective
leader in the Region 3 NSBE family. Review these few key
items to NSBE leadership development, add a little heart
and dedication and you will be well on your way to becoming
a true NSBE leader!!!
Knowing Your NSBE History
In being a leader of NSBE it is imparitive that you know
and completely understand the focus of the organization.
Our mission is to increase the number of culturally responsible
black engineers. One way in doing this is by becoming an
advocate for NSBE. This means that when reaching out to
the community, your message to the public repersents NSBE.
To help you become a NSBE advocate, there are tools throughout
this website to test your knowledge of NSBE history. Visit
the About Us section
of the NSBE National website.
Do you really know the role of your
position?
Knowing your role in NSBE is critical to fulfilling the NSBE
mission and the National Directives. During the Regional
Leadership Conference (RLC), every chapter leader is trained
into their respective positions. To better understand your
position outside of the conference, you can find helpful
documents and presentations on your regional counterpart's
webpage.
Connecting With Your Counterpart.
Just as you are a leader of NSBE to the chapter body you
serve, there is a similar leader for you on the regional
board, your regional counterpart. Your counterpart is your
connection to the entire region. Communication between you
and your counterpart may be done in meetings, conference
calls, or even just email. Your regional counterpart is not
only your NSBE leader, but he/she serves as a resource for
you as well. Never hesitate to ask your counterpart for help
in better understanding your duties as a NSBE leader. As
an effective leader, you are to communicate with your regional
counterparts frequently. It is thus imparitive that your
counterpart be connected with you as soon as possible. Email
your counterparts and submit your contact information and
a little about yourself.
Knowing the National Directives
The NSBE National Directives are the strategies in which
the leaders of NSBE have deemed necessary for fulfilling
the mission. In being a NSBE leader, you are responsible
for understanding the aim in all NSBE initiatives. This
means that you must become familiar with the National Directives
as they guide the organization through all programs and
activities. To find out the NSBE National Directives for
the 2007-2008 year, go to National
Directives of the Region 3 Website.
Preparing a Strategic Plan.
The National Directives are the national strategic objectives
established for the organization. In order to carry out
these objectives, it is up to you to work throughout the
year with customized strategies. These strategies are not
just a guide toward fulfilling the National Directives
and the NSBE mission. Strategic plans present specific
and tangible goals for you, set metrics for measuring the
success of goals, and provide a recorded log of progress
to guide future leaders of NSBE. To prepare a strategic
plan, use the tools on the Strategic Planning page for
assistance.
