The National Society of Black Engineers honors the memory of Sharon Southerland-Smith, a valued employee of NSBE for more than 18 years, who passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Sept. 15, 2019.
A graduate of Bowie State University’s Bachelor of Science program in business administration and The Johns Hopkins University’s Master of Business Administration program, Sharon served NSBE at the Society’s World Headquarters as a senior administrator under three executive directors: as director of Accounting and Finance during the tenure of Michele Lezama, as director of Accounting and Finance then as deputy executive director during the term of Carl B. Mack and as senior director, Operations in the administration of NSBE’s current executive director, Karl W. Reid, Ed.D.
Sharon’s positive impact on NSBE was immense, and she continued to benefit organizations in the nonprofit and for-profit sector with her talent, skills, sound judgment and exceptional work ethic after ending her employment with NSBE in 2016.
Sharon’s passing is a profound loss for many in the NSBE family, but our love for her will continue. The family has established a scholarship fund drive for her son, Langston. We encourage all members to show their “NSBE Luv” by contributing. Please make donations payable to “Edward Jones FBO Langston K. Smith” and reference “Acct# 9022202015” in the memo section of your check. Checks should be mailed to:
