My name is Hesham Ahmad, and I am the 2022–2023 Region III Finance chair for the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). On behalf of Region III, NSBE’s “Powerhouse Region,” I am delighted to provide you with an opportunity to collaborate with us for the 2022–2023 fiscal year.
At the Fall Regional Conference of the “Powerhouse Region,” from Nov. 4-6, 2022, you will experience the impact of NSBE in an intimate setting with our most driven members. Region III of the National Society of Black Engineers comprises all NSBE members and chapters in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Tennessee, and the Caribbean islands. Region III is known as the “Powerhouse Region,” because of the exceptional leadership, academic and technical capabilities continually exhibited by our collegiate and technical professional members.
The Powerhouse Region demonstrates its dedication to NSBE’s mission by utilizing our leadership talents and professional experience to enhance the abilities of members in technical fields. With more than 35 collegiate chapters,17 professional chapters and more than 30 NSBE Jr. chapters, the Powerhouse Region possesses the enthusiasm to successfully bring NSBE’s mission to life.
We provide our members with the tools and opportunities to grow personally, academically and professionally within STEM environments. Through participating in study halls, workshops on soft skills and events to enhance leaderships skills, members across Region III strive to make an impact on their campuses.
We, as well as our partners, enjoy giving back to our community. NSBE Region III and our partners seek to provide valuable experiences to those we interact with in our communities. Our commitment to STEM and our communities is evident through our PCI programming with STEM camps, our community outreach programs and many more events across the region. The “Powerhouse Region” uses its power to be proactive NSBE members to enhance our communities.
NSBE Fall Regional Conferences (FRCs) provide your organization with the opportunity to source candidates on a local level and help achieve your fall recruitment needs. Combining education, networking and job opportunities, FRCs offer the chance to recruit Black Engineers from your regional communities.
Each FRC includes a Career Fair, which enables organizations to recruit bright, diverse talent in engineering and other STEM fields. These unique, region-targeted events are the perfect place to match qualified candidates with your open jobs and internships on a national level, as well as at your regional and district offices. The Career Fair enables students to find local employment opportunities and are ideal for local employers looking to recruit top talent.

Opening Session is the official welcome event of the conference. Attendees receive a welcome from the sponsor and NSBE’s Regional Executive Board as well as an introduction to the conference NSBE Guide App.

The Closing Session is the culminating event of the FRC and occurs on the final night of the conference. The program includes guest speakers, a conference recap and presentations of competition winners and awards.

The Graduating Seniors Event is designed to honor NSBE students who are completing their undergraduate degrees. The purpose of this program is to celebrate the academic achievements of the students as they prepare their entry into the workplace or graduate education. This program offers students an opportunity to interact with technical professionals in a social environment that will foster networking, relationship building and mentoring opportunities.

The Academic Pyramid of Excellence (APEx) Reception brings together some of NSBE’s top academic talent for networking and professional development. Students in attendance will have GPAs of 3.0 or higher.

The Fall Regional Conference is a great networking opportunity for NSBE chapter leaders across the region. During this reception, chapter presidents learn and share information about events and activities that their chapters are hosting as well as share best leadership practices. Partners will have the opportunity to communicate with NSBE leaders in a more relaxed environment while providing students with mentoring and networking opportunities.

Conference attendees will receive laptop/book bags and lanyards as memorabilia for attending the conference. Bags will include the NSBE logo, conference dates/location and sponsor’s name and logos. One of Region III’s goals is to increase members’ technical proficiency. This event will be a coding competition that tests NSBE members’ skills in debugging and in creating codes. The NSBE Hack-A-Thon provides a valuable learning experience as well as a challenge for our members. Participants will work in groups to solve a given problem. Each group’s solution will also focus on the betterment of the organization and the community.

The Technical Research Exhibition (TRE) is a competition designed to showcase NSBE members’ skills in technical writing, theoretical research and oral presentation. TRE provides an opportunity for NSBE members to present on a variety of topics, including projects done at school, at work or on their personal time. TRE is held during the FRC and the Annual Convention and is judged by technical professionals.

The objective of the Academic Technical Bowl is to encourage and showcase academic excellence and understanding of the fundamental principles of engineering covered in senior engineering standardized tests, such as the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying Exam (FS). Program participation occurs through healthy com- petition in a “Jeopardy!” style game show format with multiple-choice questions. Questions cover a wide variety of topics, from NSBE and African American scientists and inventors’ history to general engineering and science curricula from the FE/FS. Each team consists of four (4) members and one (1) alternate, who represent their NSBE chapter.

Regional awards are presented to honor collegiate chapters and members for academic excellence, high achievement in regional competitions, fulfillment of NSBE’s mission and meeting the objectives of Region III.

The Try-Math-A-Lon (TMAL) competition is held among teams composed of high school students in grades 9–12 in every NSBE region throughout the year. The purpose of the competition is to help groom participants for success in STEM courses and prepare them for SAT/ACT testing. TMAL also measures the teams’ ability to solve a real-world engineering problem. The winners on the regional level move on to compete against other regions for the national title.

This scholarship is awarded to NSBE Jr. members in middle school or high school who have excelled academically and expressed an interest in pursuing a career in engineering or related fields. As part of our membership drive, it also enables us to retain former NSBE Jr. members when they go to college, while providing a much-needed service to students in need of financial aid.

This event promotes the interaction between NSBE Jr. and NSBE collegiate students by allowing them to participate in a competitive but fun event. PCI students will test their technical knowledge by attempting to answer STEM-based trivia questions. Partners will have the opportunity to promote their organization during this event, while also fostering relationships with NSBE Jr. and college students.

Similar in design to the collegiate NSBE Hack-A-Thon, this competition will expose students in grades 9–12 to design and website development by having them complete a one-hour technical challenge. Before the challenge begins, the. high school participants will be taught fundamental skills such as how to approach a coding challenge and the essential element of teamwork. Through this powerful experience, NSBE Pre-College Initiative (PCI) students will gain skills needed in today’s STEM industries.

The scholarship will give members an opportunity to attend conferences held by NSBE. The conferences available for these scholarships include the Region III FRC and the Annual Convention. The sponsor and the Region III Finance Zone will decide the criteria for the scholarship applications.

ALL payments must be received no later than Oct. 19, 2022. Invoices that remain unpaid after Oct. 19, 2022 will be subject to having their associated sponsorship forfeited. ANY outstanding invoice(s) after this date will prohibit entrance to the career fair and/or college fair/graduate school fair floor(s). Additional items purchased after Oct. 19, 2022 are due upon receipt and will require a credit card payment only. NOTE: No other form of payment will be honored after this date (with the exception of forms mailed in along with a check with prior approval).
