The General Session is the official business meeting for Region VI and occurs the morning of College & Career Fair Day. This is the most-attended speaking event and is the lead-in to the Career Fair, which is the most popular activity of the Fall Regional Conference.

The Opening Session is the official welcome event of the conference. Members attend to receive a welcome from the sponsor and NSBE’s Regional Executive Board as well as an introduction to the conference agenda.

The Graduating Seniors Reception is designed to honor NSBE students who are completing their undergraduate degree programs. The purpose of this event is to celebrate the academic achievements of the students as they prepare for their entry into the workplace or graduate education. The NSBE Retention Program Forum is an event that allows for the flow of knowledge from chapter to chapter on the topic of retaining members in their academic degree programs. Also, we will discuss how to better shape the Retention Program and any feedback to be given.

A Walk for Education is an event that aims to increase awareness of the opportunities available through education particularly in the STEM fields and to shatter myths about African Americans in math, science, engineering, and other technologies. AWFE has historically been a chapter-based event in which NSBE members go door to door in underserved Black communities to hand out information on college, scholarship information, SAT/ACT preparation tools, and share information on the benefits of majoring in STEM field. Various chapter event AWFEs have included a STEM fair, Engineering in Society workshops, and similar programs.

An initiative for NSBE Region VI leaders to get chapter members interested in serving on the Regional Executive Board. The current Region VI board would solicit chapter members for interest and allow those interested members to shadow board members for a period of time at FRC. The shadows should also be invited to one regional board meeting.

Participants will discuss and develop one or two essential leadership skills. At the end of the session, participants will discuss expectations for the program throughout the year.

The Scholarship Workshop explains NSBE’s GPA verification process and how to apply for NSBE scholarships and provides tips on submitting the best possible applications for scholarships within NSBE and elsewhere.

This opportunity is for an audience of the sponsor’s choosing.

Region VI’s signature event, hackNSBE, is geared toward innovative high school and college students. The competition will allow students 24 hours to design solutions to given problems chosen by the sponsor. The program will allow students to interact with sponsor representatives during presentations in which teams will discuss their product and showcase any prototypes. The competition will be divided into high school and college groups, and prizes will be given to the top teams of each group. This is an opportunity for your organization to recruit stellar talent and brand itself with students who have excellent coding skills. The winning team in the college category will be awarded $1,000 and an interview with the sponsoring organization, and the winning team in the high school category will be awarded $500. All participants will be provided a gift of the sponsor’s merchandise.

With this competition, organizations that prioritize innovation will allow collegiate members to showcase their business skills by pitching their ideas related to the sponsor’s efforts and initiatives in 1–2 minutes. (Time is customizable.) The winning pitch will be awarded $500.

The Technical Research Exhibition (TRE) is a competition designed to showcase NSBE members’ skills in technical writing, theoretical research and oral presentation. TRE provides an opportunity for NSBE members to present on a variety of topics, including projects done at school, at work or during their personal time. Members who have performed research in academia or industry are encouraged to participate. TRE is held during the FRC and the Annual Convention and is judged by technical professionals.

The objective of the Academic Technical Bowl is to encourage and showcase academic excellence and understanding of the fundamental principles of engineering covered in senior engineering standardized tests such as the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying Exam (FS). Program participation occurs through healthy competition in a Jeopardy!-style game show format with multiple-choice questions. Questions cover a wide variety of topics, from NSBE and African American scientists’ and inventors’ history to general engineering and science curricula from the FE/FS. Each team consists of four members and one alternate, who represent their NSBE chapter.

Regional awards are presented to honor NSBE Collegiate chapters and members for academic excellence, high achievement in regional competitions, fulfillment of NSBE’s mission and meeting the objectives of Region VI.

The travel scholarship will give members an opportunity to attend conferences held by NSBE. The conferences available for these scholarships include the Region VI FRC and the Annual Convention. The sponsor and the Region VI Finance Zone will decide the criteria for the scholarship applications.

One of the primary objectives of NSBE’s Pre-College Initiative (PCI) Program is to encourage students in grades 3–12 to pursue degrees in engineering and other technical fields. This scholarship is awarded to NSBE Jr. members in middle school or high school who have excelled academically and expressed an interest in pursuing a career in engineering or related fields. As part of our membership drive, the scholarship also enables us to retain former NSBE Jr. members when they go to college, while providing a much-needed service to students in need of financial aid.

The MATHCOUNTS competition is a fun and challenging mathematics program designed for teams of four U.S. middle school students to increase their academic and professional opportunities. During the program year, MATHCOUNTS coaches provide thought-provoking, non-routine, fun problems to engage and challenge each participant and make them better problem solvers.

Try-Math-A-Lon (TMAL) is a yearlong tutoring program meant to foster good study habits for minority students, groom them for success in STEM courses, help prepare them for standardized exams such as the ACT and SAT, and promote healthy competition and good sportsmanship. The TMAL competition is held between teams of four NSBE Jr. members and one alternate. Each team is composed of high school students in grades 9–10 or 11–12. Participants are provided access to an online mathematics resource to support their yearlong learning. This tool enables students to earn points during the program year, as they engage in various activities.

Conference attendees are provided with a laptop bag/book bag as a memorabilia item for attending the conference. The bag will be printed with the NSBE logo, conference date, location and partner’s name and logo. The lanyards are used to identify conference attendees and monitor participation in various events.

It is important that those organizing and facilitating the Fall Regional Conference be easily identifiable to the attendees for a variety of informational and safety reasons. Polo shirts will serve as a uniform for the Conference Planning Committee during the conference to facilitate easy identification of committee members.

ANY outstanding invoice(s) after this date will prohibit entrance to the career fair and/or college fair/graduate school fair floor(s). Additional items purchased after Oct. 19, 2023 are due upon receipt and will require a credit card payment only. NOTE: No other form of payment will be honored after this date (with the exception of forms mailed in along with a check with prior approval).
