My name is Awa-Bousso Gueye, and I am the Region V Finance Chair of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). I attend the University of Missouri– Columbia, studying Civil Engineering. I formally invite you to partner with us in fulfilling our mission “to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.” I look forward to fostering a fruitful and long-lasting relationship with you that will help advance your company’s.
Region V includes many of the largest chapters in all of NSBE: 60% of the 10 largest chapters in the Society are from our region! Region V encompasses 10 states in the central United States: Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Texas. Our region also extends internationally to Central America, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and South Africa.
With the help of our chapters, Region V was named NSBE “Region Supreme” (best region in NSBE) for 2021–2022 and 2022–2023. Region V provides your organization with the opportunity to connect with thousands of highly motivated, highly talented individuals to fill the talent pipelines within your organization.
Region V is known as the “Vanguard Region,” because we are constantly “operating at the forefront and setting the standards for others to follow.” We are constantly pushing our membership toward a high standard of innovation within both NSBE and the workplace. More than 80% of Region V’s collegiate members hold a GPA of 3.0 or higher. An important aspect of Region V is our family bond. This extends to our chapters, region leadership and individual members. The Graduating Seniors Reception is designed to honor NSBE students who are completing their undergraduate degree programs. The purpose of this event is to celebrate the academic achievements of the students as they prepare their entry into the workplace or graduate education. This program offers students an opportunity to interact with technical professionals in a social environment that will foster networking, relationship building and mentoring opportunities.

The Academic Pyramid of Excellence (APEx) Reception brings together some of NSBE’s top academic talent for networking and professional development. Students in attendance will have GPAs of 3.0 or higher.

We invite you to help our region’s membership through this professional development workshop Region V launched in 2021. Participants across all our membership levels (NSBE Jr. through NSBE Professionals) are invited to the program. The workshop will be held before the FRC Career Fair to help members prepare to interact with employers and help them secure internships and full-time positions. “How to Navigate a Career Fair!”

The purpose of this program is to assist collegiate members in reviewing their resumes while enhancing their networking skills. The Resume Critique Workshop utilizes the experience of Region V professionals and corporate representatives to enhance attendees’ awareness of how better to approach employers during the Career Fair.

The purpose of the event is to train and educate participants about matters of concern to society while advocating an effective method of resolving them.

This is a part of the NSBE Lifestyle Series. The Professional Development workshop will focus on continuing our collegiate members’ professional development through resume workshops and interview preparations. Presenters will also have the opportunity to provide information to graduating seniors who are transitioning into full-time employment and offer tips about how to navigate that journey.

This is a vibrant and diverse event that celebrates cultural exchange. Attendees have the unique opportunity to network, share ideas and forge international partnerships, while participating in interactive workshops and engaging in thought-provoking discussions. The GRE Workshop is designed to provide attendees with information about the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) and give a brief overview of the graduate school admissions process. The workshop will also include an interactive review. GRE preparatory materials will be given out as well. The sponsor will have access to Region V’s graduating seniors and other upperclassmen interested in pursuing graduate studies.

Participants make “a succinct and persuasive sales pitch,” as on the ABC TV show Shark Tank. Members are encouraged to participate in the Elevator Pitch Competition to demonstrate their skills while learning how to structure a business plan effectively. Judges will critique business plans using a set of standard criteria, and awards will be given to first, second and third place participants. Region V is open to new ideas from sponsors of this new event.

The Technical Research Exhibition (TRE) is a competition designed to showcase NSBE members’ skills in technical writing, theoretical research and oral presentation. TRE provides an opportunity for NSBE members to present on a variety of topics, including projects done at school, at work or during their personal time. TRE is held during the FRC and the Annual Convention and is judged by technical professionals.

NSBE Technical OutReach and Community Help (TORCH) is a community service initiative with the aim of using NSBE members’ technical backgrounds to positively impact the community. TORCH Fest will offer a series of workshops for our pre-collegiate members to give them the skills needed to ensure their success.

The conference entertainment events aim to provide attendees, from NSBE Jr. to Professionals, an all-around experience during their visit to the host city. After packed days of workshops and meetings, these events are a time for attendees to delight in networking and various other activities in a relaxed environment. NSBE Entrepreneurship Showcase is a space that encourages and promotes entrepreneurship among NSBE members. As attendees transition between different workshops, they will have the opportunity to visit vendors and purchase their products. By sponsoring NSBE Entrepreneurship Showcase, your organization can demonstrate its support of our students’ pursuing entrepreneurship and circulating revenue among one another.

Come mix and mingle with our membership at a Hospitality Suite during the FRC. This event features students from chapters within the Vanguard Region (Region V). With a more relaxed atmosphere than the FRC Career Fair, this pre-screening event enables students to show who they are outside of the information on their resumes.

Pre-College Initiative (PCI) chapter relief is intended to provide funding to increase the presence of PCI students at FRC. Increasing our PCI attendance feeds the STEM career pipeline from high school to college. Funds are used to cover travel expenses as well as registration costs for PCI students within the region.

K–12 students will have the opportunity to learn new skills and improve their ability to “think outside of the box” through various innovation stations. Students will have an opportunity to participate in science experiments and demonstrations to learn engineering concepts. We invite you to discuss social issues with the membership of Region V. This is an informal event to foster the NSBE family bond and is a great chance to network with future employment prospects who are interested in more than just engineering.

The PCI Competitions are designed to encourage early interest in STEM among K–12 students, by engaging students in hands-on activities that push their minds while they’re having fun. Activities include an application Hackathon and Beyblade competition.

This event serves as a networking opportunity for PCI members. The event is also a bonding activity that serves as time to mentally relax with fellow students, fostering a sense of community, social cohesion and belonging.

This event allows students to explore different pathways their career can take after college. Students will choose their top three fields from the following options: engineering, law, business, medicine and architecture. From their selected choices, they will go to different rooms to learn more about each career pathway during activities.

Spring Zone Meeting is an opportunity for members from each state of Region V to come together and recognize everything that has been accomplished. It is also a chance to highlight individuals such as our college seniors, while promoting and establishing leadership positions for the coming year. The meeting is a celebration of NSBE Region V.

Try-Math-A-Lon is a yearlong tutoring program meant to foster good study habits for minority students, lead them to success in STEM courses help them prepare for standardized exams such as the ACT and SAT and promote healthy competition and good sportsmanship. Each team is composed of high school students in grades 9–12. Participants are provided access to an online mathematics course to support their year-round learning. This tool enables students to earn points during the program year, as they engage in various activities.

ANY outstanding invoice(s) after this date will prohibit entrance to the career fair and/or college fair/graduate school fair floor(s). Additional items purchased after Nov. 8, 2023 are due upon receipt and will require a credit card payment only. NOTE: No other form of payment will be honored after this date (with the exception of forms mailed in along with a check with prior approval).
