Shelbie Prater
Region IV Chair

Shelbie Prater, 20, is a senior at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in pursuit of her Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. Originally from Detroit, MI, Prater lived in both Texas and Florida before returning home for her Bachelor’s. An elder of seven children, Shelbie strives to ensure that her younger siblings, and their peers in the Black community, are both exposed to and excited about the field of engineering, hence her involvement in NSBE.

Prater discovered NSBE in her Senior year of high school, but knew little about the organization until interacting with NSBE UM chapter members. Through mentorship with older chapter leaders, she was inspired to enter into NSBE leadership twofold as Junior Executive Board member and Chapter Senator. Today, Prater serves as NSBE’s Region IV Chairperson, where she leads a board of 19 in their efforts to empower Region IV members to be thought leaders agents of change both within NSBE and out in industry.

She has come to rely on the reminder that “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power,
love, and a sound mind.”
